Testing Marijan: A Display Font for Modern Web Design

I was working on a redesign for a boutique online store, and I needed a font that could stand out without overwhelming the design. The challenge was to find something that felt both professional and creative. That’s when I came across Marijan, a cool and thick lettered display font with a unique visual character.

First Impressions and Visual Characteristics

The moment I saw Marijan, I knew it had potential. Its bold strokes and clean lines gave it a modern yet slightly artistic feel. It wasn’t too ornate like some script fonts, nor was it too minimalistic like a standard sans serif. This made it versatile enough to work in a variety of digital contexts.

The font has a distinct personality—confident, stylish, and just the right amount of playful. It’s not the kind of typeface you’d use for long paragraphs, but it shines when used sparingly for emphasis or headlines. I immediately thought about using it for the hero section of the website.

Using Marijan in Real Web Projects

I started by applying Marijan to the main headline of the hero section. The result was impressive. The thick letters stood out against the background image, making the message clear and engaging. It felt like the perfect match for a brand that wanted to project confidence and creativity.

Next, I tested it in the navigation bar. While it worked well for the logo, I noticed that using it for every menu item might reduce readability. So, I opted to pair it with a simpler sans serif font for the body text. This helped maintain visual hierarchy and improved overall legibility.

I also experimented with using Marijan for call-to-action buttons. The boldness of the font made the buttons more noticeable, which could be beneficial for increasing user engagement. However, I made sure to keep the button text short so it didn’t become cluttered.

Readability and Responsive Design Considerations

One of the most important aspects of any font is its readability, especially on mobile devices. I checked how Marijan performed on smaller screens and found that while it looked great on desktops, it needed a bit more spacing between characters on mobile. Adjusting the letter spacing slightly helped improve clarity without sacrificing the font’s visual appeal.

For dark backgrounds, I used a lighter color to ensure contrast. On light backgrounds, I kept the default black for maximum visibility. I also avoided using it over busy images, as this could make the text harder to read. Instead, I used subtle overlays or white backgrounds to highlight the text.

Font Pairing and Brand Consistency

Marijan works best when paired with a complementary font. For body copy, I chose a clean sans serif like Helvetica Neue or Open Sans. This combination allowed the headings to stand out while keeping the rest of the content easy to read. It created a nice balance between style and functionality.

For a more editorial look, I considered pairing it with a serif font like Georgia or Merriweather. This gave the site a slightly more traditional feel, which could be ideal for a blog or a portfolio site with a storytelling approach.

It’s also worth noting that Marijan comes with several weights and alternates, giving me more flexibility in different sections of the site. Whether I needed a bolder headline or a subtler accent, the font had the right options available.

Practical Tips for Using Marijan

If you're considering using Marijan for your next project, here are a few things to keep in mind:

Marijan is a great addition to any designer's toolkit. It brings a fresh, confident feel to digital layouts without being over the top. As I continued refining the boutique store’s design, I found that Marijan helped elevate the brand’s identity and made the site feel more polished and intentional.
